For Julienne's big 32nd birthday, we spent a week at the beach in The Gambia and the Casamance Region of Southern Senegal. We were a little unsure about visiting Casamance, as it has travel warnings for its past separatist movement, but all the foreign journalists we met gave it the a-okay. Granted, they are all hankering for assignments to Libya, but nonetheless, they seemed like reliable sources. The trip to Casamance turned out to be incredibly peaceful, beautiful and totally chill. Beer on the beach at sunset every night, fresh bread and jam every morning, and a few dinners with seafood caught from a fellow lodger. To keep the vacation vibe, we opted for a luxurious passenger boat with a two-bed cabin, air-conditioning, hot showers (our first in 5 weeks) and pairs of dolphins cruising alongside the boat's wake. The only downside was that we realized that Sara does indeed get motion sickness, three hours into the 16 hour trip through the Atlantic. All in all, totally a bonne anniversare!
